Winter Safety

The first snow fall of the year has been predicted.  The Aegis Legal RTA department have provided some useful advice in relation to driving safely in wintery conditions.

Driving

It is important to adapt the way we drive during winter, it is important to be prepared for journey longer and for road conditions to become more varied.

Listen to travel reports and weather bulletins, conditions can change rapidly and it is important to check the conditions regularly and change your plans if necessary.   If it is recommended that you do not travel, consider whether your journey is essential or could be postponed.

Your Vehicle

Ensure your vehicle is prepared for the journey.  Ensure your tyres are in good condition, correctly inflated and with adequate tread depth.  Ensure your light are clean and working and your battery is fully charged.  Keep our windscreen clean and make sure your brakes are working well.

Keep and emergency kit in your car, if possible, include the following:-

A shovel
A hazard warning triangle
A torch
De-icing equipment
First aid kit (in good order)
A warm blanket
Mobile Phone

If you must drive

Prepare yourself for the journey, wear warm clothes and allow extra time. Inform someone of where you are going and your likely route and anticipated time of arrival.  Adapt your driving to the conditions.

·         Reduce your speed

·         Avoid harsh braking and acceleration

·         Use your brakes gently and drive in a lower gear when trying to brake on ice or snow

·         Increase the gap between your vehicle and the vehicle in front
